What are MCTs and should I use them?

MCTs, or medium-chain triglycerides, are shorter chain saturated fats that are commonly found in oil or powder form. They are unique because they are:

  • handled differently than other fats by directly absorbing through the intestines
  • either burned for energy or converted into ketones making them less likely to be stored as fat
  • potentially useful to suppress hunger, improve cognitive function, increase energy, and lower cholesterol
  • potentially useful but GI tolerance can be a limiting factor

MCTs can be helpful on the Keyto Program, especially when you are first starting. While we recommend you get most of your nutrition from whole food sources, you can experiment with MCTs and see how they make you feel.
