Coffee, Cream, and Bulletproof Coffee

Coffee is a staple beverage enjoyed by many cultures for its taste and health benefits. Coffee is rich in vitamins and oxidants that can decrease risks of developing diabetes, liver disease, and some types of cancers. Athletes and professionals drink it for the caffeine, which enhances mental and physical performance, elevates mood, and provides energy.

Coffee is also virtually calorie-free making it an excellent beverage for Key Eats. In addition, having a cup of coffee is a great option when hungry, or a good end to any meal.

Many people enjoy coffee black, which is the top option for Key Eats. For those that enjoy coffee with cream or sweetener, be aware that many   add-ons are not keto-friendly. Specialty creamers and sweetener are often full of non-nutritive calories in the form of simple sugars. With the exception of heavy cream, liquid dairy (i.e. milk) contains enough carbs to sabotage ketosis.

While adding a few tablespoons of milk to your coffee isn’t likely to kick you out of ketosis, heavy cream tastes better and has less carbs!

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

The BPC’s essential ingredients are coffee, butter, and Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) oil. MCT oil and butter provide a dose of satiating fats making this a favorite among the intermittent fasting community. And because neither cause a spike in blood sugar, there are no energy crashes in a few hours.

MCTs are a special category of saturated fat that bypass normal fat metabolism. They are transported to the liver and either used immediately for energy or converted into ketones.  This property makes them less likely to be stored as fat. MCTs increase focus, enhance performance, and help stabilize mood.

Will Drinking Bulletproof Coffee or Coffee with Cream Break My Fast?

Intermittent fasting (IF) is popular among the low-carb community because of how easy it is to implement while following the ketogenic diet. Skipping breakfast is a popular IF protocol because you’ve already fasted during sleep. But what if you love drinking BPC to kick start your day? Will drinking BPC break my fast?  The more important questions are why you practice IF, what are your goals, and will consuming BPC impede your progress toward these goals?

Even though BPC contains a decent amount of calories, it does not trigger a significant insulin response. MCTs are used immediately for energy or converted to ketones, and butter is carb-free so it doesn’t negatively affect ketosis. In addition, caffeine boosts metabolism and mobilizes fatty acids stored in body-fat. The result is you can go longer without feeling hungry, perform better at work, and lose weight all at the same time!

Conclusion

Coffee is a great item for Key Eats. We recommend it black, but if you enjoy it creamier, bulletproof coffee or coffee with a splash of heavy cream are great alternatives.
